What is a child custody evaluation?

A Child Custody Evaluation is a comprehensive, detailed forensic evaluation of a family. It provides the court with an expert assessment of family functioning and dynamics. Evaluators, at the court’s request, can answer specific referral questions or provide recommendations regarding supports, interventions, and services that would serve the child’s best interest.

 What is an expert witness?

An expert witness is a professional who has the training, education, and experience necessary to assist a trier of fact (i.e., judge or jury) in understanding scientifically-based psychological aspects of a case. Dr. Humphrey is an expert in child and family psychology (including parenting and parenting capacity) and child abuse and neglect.

What benefit is there to consultation?

Experts can also assist an attorney in understanding evidence that has been presented by psychologists or other mental health professionals. A consultant can review the work of other experts and help in crafting an approach to a trial or mediation that takes the child’s best interest into account. Consultants in child protection, family court, or termination of parental rights trials are conscious of a duty to seek, to the best of their ability, the best outcome for the child or children involved.

 What is mediation?

Mediation is the process of helping parties (usually parents) resolve differences. The mediator is a neutral third party who cannot adjudicate, but can offer help in identifying barriers to resolution, exploring alternative solutions in a confidential environment, and helping the parties come to an agreement.
